Other appellations besides “FUT-strip” hair transplant and “FUE” hair transplant are for marketing purposes only.
Basically two state-of art hair transplant harvesting method is known scientifically:
– FUT-strip harvesting (also called Follicular Unit Strip Surgery, FUSS)
– FUE– Follicular Unit Extraction (individual follicles extraction technique)
In strip harvesting doctors take strips of hair-bearing tissue from the donor area of the head dissect it for follicular units and place them on the bald or any required area, while with FUE – follicular unit excision (extraction), doctors take follicular units each by each, and transplant them on the bald or any required area. One can meet in the international hair transplant information materials several different names for hair transplant techniques, especially for FUE method.
Unfortunately some of them are misleading and inappropriate.
Those names like ” FUE2 Safe System” or „FUE2 hair transplant” ,”she hair transplant” „S.H.E. method” “FUE3″,”FUEE”, “DHI” (direct hair implantation), “DFR” (direct follicular relocation), “Safe System FUE2”, “Safe System fue”, “FUE2 hair transplant” “FUE plus hair transplant”, “FUE3”, “s.h.e. hair transplant”, “she method”,”profue method”, “3G hair transplant”, „U-FUE hair transplant”, “fue gold”, “sapphire fue”, “ice fue” are only for marketing purpose, do not represent a separate method at all, they are all using the basic FUE method. Any surgeon can use somewhat different equipments for individual follicular harvesting or can prefer different techniques e.g. manual or powered, or use different type of punch knife ( e.g. sharp vs. dull, different techniques for the recipient site (e.g forceps or implanter placing) but it is still the same FUE method and nothing else.
There are several well known devices on the market like Trivellini, WAW FUE SYSTEM, Zeus-Ugraft, Safe System -Safe Scribe, NeoGraft, ARTAS ( robotic harvesting and site making machine), SmartGraft, Atera FUE-100, PCID ( used for”FIT -CIT” (follicular isolation technique, Cole isolation technique) and a lot of others, working somewhat differently but using the same principle and the same drilling-oscillation-vibration- suction technique for extracting the follicular units. None of them better than any other, as they are still operated by the surgeon ( beside of ARTAS- partially) so the result is fully depends on the medical personal’s skill. ARTAS is claiming being better than handhold devices ( incl.powered devices) but the results are not supporting this marketing issue.
And this is only about hair harvesting! It is very misleading to proclaim the importance of the harvesting technique only, especially inappropriately. There are several other steps and details of every surgery, tailored for every patient individually which are as much important as graft harvesting, These are for instance: education and information of the patient, differential diagnosis, planning the surgery (short and long term), pre-op preparations, anaesthesia, hairline design, recipient site making, frontal hairline creation, denisty issues, graft storage, additional interventions, post. op care etc.
