What happens to you during hair transplant surgery?

Arrival
Hair transplant surgeries at the Sikos Hair Transplant Clinic usually start at 9 a.m., but it is necessary to arrive at the clinic at 8 a.m. due to preparations, sometimes bit earlier.. To avoid delays, patients coming from further away (especially in winter) are advised to arrive in Budapest the day before. Please bring your completed medical records with you.

Alcohol, smoking, edicines
Don't drink alcohol, reduce or quit smoking the day before. Take care of a restful night's rest and sleep. Eating a light breakfast before leaving home is possible and recommended. Take your usual medications, if any. One week before surgery, stop taking blood-increasing medication (e.g. Aspirin)

Accomodation
After your arrival, you can settle comfortably in your room and say goodbye to your companions. Afterwards, we take care of the administration, check your tests, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. A sedative pill is given as preparation for surgery.

Surgical marking
The area to be covered and the hairline are marked in front of a mirror in agreement with the patient. We take photos of the condition before surgery.

Hair clipping (as needed)
The hair is trimmed to 1-2 mm in a manner agreed with the patient. The donor site usually shall be shaved completely (back and sides). The recipient site does not necessarily need to be clipped (we can also do the implantation in long hair), but if this is not a problem for the patient (e.g. there is little or short hair here anyway), we will shave it here as well. This makes the surgery easier to perform and more importantly it makes post-operative care easier and more effective. In case of "No shave FUE" patient can retain full hair without any clipping.

Getting into the surgery
The patient is accompanied to the operating theatre in the patient shirt and slippers we provide, and is covered with sterile draping.
PROCESS OF FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant surgery procedure

Anaesthesia
After disinfection, anaesthesia is administered to the donor and in a later phase to the recipient area. The injections used for local anaesthesia are administered with little discomfort, little pain, but only take about 5 minutes of the total operating time. There is no pain during and after the operation!

Excision of grafts (harvesting )
You lie on your stomach or side during the graft/hair removal. This phase lasts about 2-3 hours, with rests if necessary. (Contrary to all rumours, you cannot read or watch TV during this time...) The FUE grafts removed are counted and grouped according to their hair content

Preparation of recipient sites
In the recipient site, we prepare the small wounds and openings in which the grafts are implanted

Lunch break
This is followed by a lunch break of about half an hour, during which you can comfortably eat the lunch of your choice, provided by the clinic.

Placing of grafts
After the lunch break, the implantation (placement) of the harvested grafts takes place in the supine or semi-recumbent position: the grafts are inserted into the prepared openings in about 2-3 hours. The total duration of the operation is usually 6-8 hours, but of course it depends on the amount of grafts to be transplanted.

HEAD Bandaging, post-operative advice
After the operation, you will be given a surgical cap to wear for one day. The patient will leave with this cap and general advice on head care.
With FUE, our clinic is unique in being able to provide up to 800-1500 complete, high-quality grafts per hour based on our extensive experience. On average, a patient can have about 1500-3500 grafts (about 3000-8000 hairs) transplanted in one surgery day in about 5-8 hours of pure surgery time. This minimises the time the patient spends in the operating theatre and the grafts spend as little time as possible outside the body.
FUT (strip removal) surgery procedure

The preparation phase is the same as described for the FUE hair removal procedure, except for the hair cut. In this procedure, hair is only trimmed in the area of the strip and no trimming is required in the recipient area.

After disinfection, the area of the scalp strip to be removed is anaesthetised with injections. This takes about 5 to 6 minutes and then there is complete painlessness for the duration of the operation. The scalp strip is removed and the wound is closed (prone position, about 30 minutes)

After anaesthesia, the recipient openings are prepared and the grafts are inserted into the prepared openings (in a comfortable semi-recumbent position for about 3-4 hours). The strip is processed (grafts are prepared) continuously during the procedure.
Healing After hair transplant surgery
Outpatient procedure
Hair transplant is an outpatient procedure, patients can leave the office on their own feet. Driving is strictly opposed.
Post.op. period, healing process
Following surgery there is no pain, small tension at the donor site is possible, but it disappears step by step. For one day headbandage in form of a light surgical cap is applied, removing it with careful haedwash is necessary. We recommend only head wash for 5-6 days, after which you can gently cleanse the scalp with your fingers and help the crusts around the implanted grafts to come off. One can count on some swelling (reactive oedema) on the forhead which disappears in about 10 days itself. Also redness appear for a period of skin healing, which sometimes can lasts for longer weeks in more sensitive skin.
